There are many things you must understand before committing to go into elementary education.
Elementary education is a very demanding profession, even if it doesn't seem that way. After conducting some research, and watching a couple videos from other teachers, I have learned some things that everyone should know before going into elementary education.
1. The first thing that has come up across all my sources, is that you must understand the salary. Obviously the salaries of teachers depend on where they're teaching, who they're teaching, and also how long they've been teaching, but there is one important thing to understand about the money teacher make. Yes the amount is small, but there is a huge misconception that you can't live off a teacher's salary. That is completely not true! The teachers that created the videos I watch both said it is completely possible to live off a smaller salary, you just need to understand budgeting more! Of course it helps to work multiple jobs, but there are some teachers, especially those just starting out, that might not feel like they have time to work another job.
2. You have to stay "on." A teacher whose video I watch said this and I think it is one of the best ways to explain the alertness and attentiveness that comes with being a teacher. She explained how there are some jobs that you can doze off for a minute, or take a break and go get some coffee or go for a walk to clear your head, but you can't do that when you're a teacher. You must always pay attention and be awake and attentive to everything that happens in your classroom.
